Mims Exotic: My Wild Connection to the Animal Kingdom

Updated: Jul 31

There’s a version of me that comes alive when I’m in the presence of animals.

It’s not just admiration—it’s kinship. A silent understanding. Something ancient and intuitive. I’ve always felt connected to creatures, wild or domestic. Maybe it’s because they don’t wear masks. Animals don’t fake interest. They feel energy. They move with instinct, honesty, and intention. I respect that deeply.

I grew up experiencing a healthy variety of animals—our home was like a mini-zoo. Dogs of every shape and personality, parakeets chirping in the morning, turtles navigating backyard ponds, even fish that somehow became part of the family. Those early connections taught me that animals weren’t just pets—they were teachers. Companions. Stewards of something unseen.

Traveling the world has only deepened that bond.

I’ve had birds sing me awake in places where alarm clocks don’t exist. I’ve fed giraffes, watched cheetahs sprint, swam with sharks, and looked up at hawks mid-hover, marveling at their stillness in flight.

Each moment with an animal feels like a message. A reminder to slow down, listen, be present. They don’t worry about likes or deadlines. They live in rhythm with the earth. And every time I encounter one, it grounds me. It makes me more me. I’ve come to believe animals are more than background scenery—they’re guides. Protectors.

One night in Guatemala, that belief was confirmed in the most unexpected way. I was walking home alone when a pack of stray dogs appeared. Not aggressive—just present. They surrounded me in a loose circle, keeping pace as I moved. When I took a wrong turn, they stopped. When I corrected, they moved with me. It was as if they knew I needed company, protection, direction. And they gave it, without question.

I’ve had close encounters that should’ve been dangerous, but never were. I’ve walked beside tigers, swam with sharks, and washed elephants in Thailand, their massive trunks curling gently as if to say, you're safe here. I’ve stood close enough to hear a lion breathe. Close enough to feel the trust it takes to not run.

Each of these moments—whether wild or tender—has marked me. Animals, in their own mysterious way, have shown up for me like stewards on my journey. They’ve reminded me to stay present, move with intention, and stay wild at heart.

That’s why I call this part of my life and travels Mims Exotic. It’s not about danger or spectacle—it’s about honoring the connection I’ve always felt with the animal kingdom. Whether I’m behind the lens or just sitting still in their presence, animals remind me who I am—and who I’m still becoming.

So if you ever wonder where I’m headed next, just know—my friends with feathers, fur, scales, or spirit—will already be there. As I listen, learn, and walk in the wild.
